Notes and Editorial Reviews

Marvellous music and a very attractive price, and for many the combination will be sufficient and indeed irresistable. But you will also find some fine performances thrown in. I would not myself accord the highest praise to the Double Concerto which is a little too hurried for my taste, especially in the first movement which has a slightly hectic atmosphere. The last sounds almost aggressive, but that makes for excitement, and the music is certainly alive. I also thought Kenneth Sillito too fast in the finale of the solo Violin Conerto in A minor—at this tempo the semiquaver passages lose definition—but he is good in the first movement and very good indeed in the slow one; his expressive tone and intelligent support from the orchestra Read more contribute to an outstanding performance full of poetry. Hugh Bean is equally good in the E major Concerto. He projects the music more positively and with more style than his rival on the Oryx disc reviewed on p. 277 and catches the cheerful flavour of the finale with a lighter touch. Both these players have spent all too much of their lives in orchestras, and must often have heard less notable performances than their own given by players whose greater fame is by no means based on greater ability. I hope to be recommending further recordings by them irk the near future. I must add that Arthur Davison draws some acceptable playing from the orchestra, and the balance and sound quality are excellent except for the lack of stereo separation between the soloists in the Double Concerto.
