Notes and Editorial Reviews

In the German Requiem...the music flows naturally. It is a deeply satisfying version, with an account of the final movements both dramatic and ethereal. Aafje Heynis's lovely singing in the Alto Rhapsody...is even more dedicated and 'inner' than Kathleen Ferrier's, and the tonal shading is most beautiful.

reviewing the German Requiem and Alto Rhapsody

No contest, for once there is an outright winner and it is the Sawallisch/Philips performance... Sawallisch has always been a strong advocate for Mendelssohn, and here he shows it in no uncertain terms, bringing out the harmonic daring of choruses that, in the wrong hands, can seem glutinous... Elly Ameling
Read more is anxious and keen as she should be as the Widow, flawlessly clean in note and line in ''Hear Ye Israel''... The young Schreier phrases his two solos with feeling for the weight of words and notes... I believe [this] to be one of the great choral recordings and, I hope...it will at last receive its due here.
