Notes and Editorial Reviews

Prokofiev’s chamber music is stimulating, hugely varied, and impregnated with his distinctive brand of melody. Take the two Violin Sonatas – the First intensely dramatic, by turns rhetorical and contemplative, epic in its content; the Second altogether cosier, a reworking of a slightly earlier Sonata for the flute. Bell and Mustonen are well attuned to this music, their interpretations thoughtful and persuasive.

-- Wadham Sutton, BBC Music Magazine

Bell's performance of [the second] concerto is not quite so intense, with the slow movement plainer, less immediately emotional but ravishing in its beauty. Generally, helped by the outstanding Decca recording, Bell finds more light and shade in the work. His
Read more version comes into direct competition not so much with Perlman as with other fine versions coupling both Prokofiev concertos, notably Chung's and Mintz's. If in his open lyricism Bell lacks some of the darker, more melancholy emotions that Chung above all conveys, his exceptionally pure tone, far less reliant on heavy vibrato than Mintz's, and his mastery in easily compelling phrasing put his performances of both concertos among the finest yet. His technical command too in bravura double-stopping comes close in its power and confidence to that of Perlman. His performances are very well matched by Dutoit and the Montreal orchestra, recorded in sound of a richness and immediacy remarkable even for Decca engineering in the church of St Eustache.

ORCHESTRAL IMBALANCE  September 23, 2013 By   See All My Reviews "Joshua Bell's performances are amazing; however, I was very disappointed in the recording as the orchestra is so heavy upon entrances. I therefore find that throughout the CD I must constantly turn up or down the volume to hear Joshua Bell's impeccable performances and not be "startled" by the orchestral entrances. I believe this obvious imbalance is related to the sound equipment and/or the production of this CD. Mr. Bell's performances, however, are exquisite!" Report Abuse
