If it was a dog, it would shed. January 21, 2015 By William S. (Renton, WA) See All My Reviews "I've been collecting (and will continue to collect) the Butt/Dunedin performances of choral music on Linn. The interpretations have been magnificent, and the sound the sort of audiophile-realistic that one dreams of. >> I was expecting Butt's Brandenburgs to be one of the greats. Alas, yesterday I heard the Third (on KING FM), not knowing who was performing until the end. He plows through the work like a Panzer division, taking no prisoners and leaving no musical theme standing, running roughshod over the music and trashing it. (It's actually worse than what Gardiner did to The Nine. I can't believe I just wrote that.) This is not a matter of a reasonable difference in taste or opinion. Butt's is a shallow, charmless, unidiomatic performance that sounds as if someone was holding guns to the conductor's and musicians' heads. >> I've always had trouble with the Brandenburgs. Not the music itself, but with the performances. I never heard one -- not even from my belovéd Jordi Savall -- that sounded quite right. Then, by accident, I came across Helmut Winschermann conducting a pickup group. (The German Bach Soloists are for real?) >> These performances -- and those of the Orchestral Suites -- eclipse all the other performances I've heard over nearly half a century. >> Yes, I know how stupid that sounds. It's one thing to say "This is my favorite performance" or even "This is the best performance", and quite another to say "This is the only good recorded performance." Winschermann "gets" these works -- and no one else does. Yes, really. >> Let me put it in less-subjective way. Winschermann conducts these works differently from everyone else. They are light, buoyant, dancelike (without being superficial), without ever falling into the chug-chugga-chugga slogging of other conductors. It might be that I'm "wired" to like only the Winschermann performances. So be it. >> I don't know which label these originally appeared on, but they found a home on LaserLight, a Canadian reissue label. The easiest way to get the Brandenburgs and Overtures is to buy a used copy of the 10-disk Bach set. (You can find it on Amazon.) >> Trust me. Don't be a Butt-head. Get the Winschermann."
