Notes and Editorial Reviews

This album of Schumann Lieder is one of the finest Naxos has given us. Thomas E. Bauer’s young voice is in early bloom and well on its way in the process of growing from pretty to beautiful. The technique is solid and the schooling thorough—perhaps a little too much so at times, as one occasionally hears more schooling than poetry. One also senses that some of the songs are more his own than others, the most impressive being those of the young poet’s disillusionment in Dichterliebe. The voice resounds wonderfully and truthfully in “Ich grolle nicht,” and from that point, the listener is convinced that these words and their sentiments lie deep in the singer’s heart. In the Liederkreis, op. 24, this depth and maturity is only sometimes Read more apparent. Perhaps it is asking too much of new singers when we demand the same emotional commitment and immediacy that we find in artists of past eras. Wilhelm Grüning, for example, who was born just two years after Schumann’s death, brings an entirely different world into view with “Mit Myrten und Rosen,” recorded in 1914 and available to us on a Symposium disc. It might be that it is impossible to escape the intrusion of our time, our oceans of movies, our oceans of television dramas, and the theft of emotions, taken as they have been, from the hands of the poet and given over to science with all of its psychology and pathology and pharmacology. Thomas E. Bauer, however, comes as close as any other contemporary artist to spanning that distance between old and new. The pianist, Uta Hielscher, proves an excellent colleague, with her beautiful tone and sensitive use of rubato. There is much to admire and much to be moved by on this disc, and most important, a promise of much to look forward to in their future recordings.

The sound engineers give us a rich, bright ambience, with generally excessive reverberation that seems to be electronically produced and entirely unnecessary.

Raymond Beegle, FANFARE

"Thomas E. Bauer is a young German baritone who, on the evidence of this CD of Schumann gems from his wonderful 1840 songs, is one of today's brightest lights on the recital scene. His quality instrument is light and well-focused, with an excitingly bright, cutting top, beautifully poised, hushed pianissimos, and a fabulous rhythmic sense. " --Dan Davis, ClassicsToday.com
