Notes & Reviews Back to Top
This disc was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Engineered Album, Classical."
The CD market may be flooded with Mahler recordings, but like the music itself, each one is personal. This recording by Esa-Pekka Salonen is no exception. Salonen brings a cleanliness of score that is not often heard in such a massive, emotional work. Also, and unlike Bernstein or Abbado, Salonen keeps the forward motion going, almost without fail. At times this is quite effective and at other times it seems rushed, but it works particularly well in the lighter inner movements of the work.
The work itself is a bit of a strange concoction. It uses Wunderhorn texts like the other early symphonies, but contains a completely different type of apotheosis. The scherzo-like inner movements do not give way to a grand choral finale a la Beethoven but instead a grand instrumental adagio of extreme emotional weight. Yet somehow it all fits, and when the final chord resonates on and on, there is that Mahlerian satisfaction that can't be found anywhere else.
This recording is extremely technically polished, but lacks the drama and spaciousness of other recordings on the market. However, the wind playing is some of the finest on record.
