Notes and Editorial Reviews
Back by popular demand, The Toscanini Collection is a reissue of RCA’s 1992 compendium that encompassed all of the recordings Toscanini made with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and NBC Symphony. A new addition to this amazing collection is his approved recordings with the BBC Symphony from the 1930s that were not included in the 1992 edition. This limited-edition package is the complete RCA Toscanini Collection on 84 CDs plus a bonus DVD, “The Maestro.” The deluxe hard- cover book contains liner notes by Toscanini biographers Mortimer F. Frank and Michael Stegemann.
From the Maestro’s acoustic recordings of 1920-21 with La Scala orchestra, to his 1954 retirement, The Toscanini Collection spans all the

years in which Toscanini’s career veered away from the opera house as it moved exclusively to the concert hall. As with his NBC broadcasts and recordings, the BBC and Philadelphia accounts disprove the specious notion that Arturo Toscanini was always the same from one performance of a given work to the next. The BBC recordings have special value for occurring in Queen’s Hall, acoustically London’s finest concert venue.
Particularly interesting are three NBC performances of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, two from broadcasts (October 28, 1939 and December 6, 1953), and the third from a 1949 Carnegie Hall recording session. With each performance being somewhat different from the other, they serve as a reminder of how Toscanini was invariably rethinking his approach to a particular work.

RCA no number (86 CDs: c.5760:00)
This is a reissue of the
Arturo Toscanini Collection
that RCA released in 1992, but with significant differences. For one, everything here has come under the control of Sony, which has acquired the rights to RCA’s classical catalog. The earlier set was offered in a three-shelved cabinet having a glass door retaining 71 discs. This one is housed in a sturdy cardboard box holding 86 CDs, each held in a slim cardboard envelope, the entire packaging taking up but a third of the space that the earlier set required. It is also the first set to feature Toscanini leading four different orchestras (five if one includes the single disc devoted to his acoustic (sonically antediluvian) recordings made in the U.S. with the La Scala Orchestra.
For those who may have acquired the 1992 set, this new one is essentially redundant, especially as the BBC recordings can be had in fine transfers made for Naxos by Mark Obert-Thorn. (They may have to be gotten directly from England, as they may not be for sale in the U.S.) What further distinguishes this production from its predecessor is an entirely new 168-page, hardcover trilingual booklet with three essays, each proffered in English, German, and French and written by three Toscanini authorities. Their views on divergent subjects are welcome, as is the comprehensive index the booklet includes.
Perhaps the greatest virtue of this box is its restoration of material that (at least in the U.S.) has either been out of print or difficult to obtain. Particularly impressive in this regard is Toscanini’s first of three recordings of Beethoven’s “Eroica,” a 1939 broadcast account unmatched in its tensile thrust, textural transparency, and subtle rhythmic inflection, all projected in sound that, despite the 8H dryness, boasts an impact, clarity, and dynamic range that is years ahead of its time. And, as some may know, all of the New York Philharmonic recordings suggest a conductor who favored a more flexible pulse and weightier sonority than he produced at NBC.
Interesting for a variety of reasons are other performances. The 1940 broadcast account of the first and fourth tableaux of
Petrushka
, for example, comprises the only surviving Toscanini performance of Stravinsky among the very few works of the composer that he ever gave. Commanding in a different way is the 1941 NBC account of the Brahms First Symphony. Recorded in Carnegie Hall, it comprises a weightier, more rhythmically supple reading than the one Toscanini recorded 10 years later in the same venue.
Throughout this set there is duplication of repertory: three NBC Beethoven “Eroicas”; two each of all the composer’s other symphonies save Nos. 2 and 9; three Schubert Ninths (two with the NBC orchestra, one with the Philadelphia Orchestra); four recordings of his own arrangement of “Dawn and Siegfried’s Rhine Journey” from
Götterdämmerung
(one with the New York Philharmonic, three with the NBC Symphony), to cite but some. All defy the specious notion that he was always the same from one performance to the next of a given work. Each of the broadcast performances he gave at NBC of operas is here—Beethoven’s
Fidelio
(with dialog omitted); Verdi’s
Aida, Falstaff, Otello, La traviata,
and
Un ballo in maschera
; and Puccini’s
La bohème
. All comprise major documents of a maestro who worshiped Beethoven and had close personal ties to Verdi and Puccini. No librettos are provided
Not included in RCA’s original “complete” set is disc 72—a previously issued video revealing Toscanini in three contexts: his personal life with his family, on the 1950 NBC Symphony transcontinental tour, and in rehearsal and concerts. Particularly fascinating is the marked contrast between the maestro’s bold dramatic gestures in the former and the controlled economy of his beat in front of an audience. Of primary significance, perhaps, this set gives Toscanini a dimension that has not been equaled on disc by any other conductor of the first half of the 20th century. It belongs in every public and university library concerned with classical music and should be welcomed by those who have a strong (yet incompletely satisfied) interest in the maestro.

Best money ever spent September 15, 2012
By Michael Z. (New York, NY) See All My Reviews
"If you're a fan of Toscanini, don't miss this set. It's an exceptional deal. Some of the sound quality is not as good as we'd like it to be but, considering the latest recordings were made in the fifties (and most others much earlier), it's understandable. Playing and interpretations are all first-rate. Best $120. I ever spent."

Toscanini, a recorded review of his life work . September 13, 2012
By Howard Armstrong (Wantagh, NY) See All My Reviews
"This collection keeps the memory and accomplishments of Toscanini alive. Excellent restoration effort. Performances without the coloration that other conductors insert in the music."

Bargain set of great music September 4, 2012
By Kevin Parker (Greenbelt, MD) See All My Reviews
"I'm still working my way through this collection, but I've enjoyed it greatly so far. (I bought the box for my parents as well, and they report the same.) I grew up on Toscanini's Beethoven and am glad to have that and more. And of course Toscanini is an iconic conductor, particularly in this country. The only downside is that the sound quality sometimes makes it clear that these are very old recordings, made with less sophisticated technology than is now available. I note that, but then I get swept away by the music all over again."
