Notes and Editorial Reviews

Rewiew of the Kempe orchestral recordings:

There's not a single performance here that doesn't glow with insight, intelligence, and inner warmth. How does one begin to describe these riches? Start with Kempe's absolute smoker of a Don Juan, continue on to the most lovable, rollicking Till Eulenspiegel imaginable (not quite as quick-witted as Kempe's earlier Berlin Philharmonic traversal), then bask in the conductor's frothy arrangement of the Rosenkavalier Waltzes. Likewise, all the concerted works are well done, as Kempe shadows his soloists with sophisticated elan. Until his RCA Alpine Symphony is reissued, Kempe's Dresden remake remains the most atmospheric and fluent version of
Read more this sprawling opus on disc. Paul Tortelier's lithe-toned, deeply felt cello playing elevates this third and finest of his recorded Don Quixotes to classic status alongside Rostropovitch/Karajan and Fournier/Szell. From the dark, brooding Metamorphosen to the playful pastiche of the ballet suites, Kempe lavishes love and care upon all he touches. This is the ultimate Richard Strauss orchestral collection. Don't pass it up! – Jed Distler, ClassicsToday.com

Review of the chamber music recordings, originally issued on the Arts Music label:
The performances are culled from live and studio sessions jointly produced by the Richard Strauss Institute and Munich and Bavarian Radio; all are of a high standard, even if you prefer alternative recordings of familiar fare like the Violin and Cello Sonatas and the late Sonatinas for Wind Ensemble. If one musician warrants singling out, it is Wolfgang Sawallisch, who gets a rare chance to flex his remarkable piano chops supporting the excellent cellist Peter Wöpke in the Op. 6 sonata. This is not to undervalue the excellent Mrongovius piano duo "de-orchestrating" the Second Symphony and Aus Italien, Gitti Priner's sensitive renderings of the lovely Op. 3 piano pieces, or the Bläser Ensemble Armadé's tonal opulence. – Jed Distler, ClassicsToday.com

Reviews of the Schwarzkopf/Karajan Der Rosenkavalier:
Schwarzkopf’s rapturously tragic Marschallin may be the star of Karajan’s intensely emotional 1956 recording, but with Christa Ludwig’s fervent Octavian, Teresa Stich-Randall’s refulgent Sophie and singers of the calibre of Ljuba Welitsch as Marianne and Nicolai Gedda as the Italian tenor, this is luxurious in every sense. – Claire Wrathall, BBC Music Magazine

This recording really does triumph over them all. – Gramophone

Review of the Marc/Sinopoli Elektra:
Sinopoli's Elektra bears all of the hallmarks of his great recording of Salome (possibly the finest ever recorded) - great transparency, an unnerving sense of a drama unfolding and a great rapport with his singers. Alessandra Marc is very fine in the title role, and absolutely compelling in her closing scene. What makes this recording so recommendable is the playing of the Vienna Philharmonic and the engineering... A wonderful, fully aural experience, as spectacular as any since CDs were first released. – Marc Bridle, MusicWeb International

Review of the Voigt/Sinopoli Ariadne auf Naxos:
Sinopoli gets playing from the Dresden forces that makes everything Strauss and Hoffmansthal were driving at absolutely clear... Deborah Voigt is absolutely lovely, singing with warmth and commitment, easily the equal of those stars of the so-called "Golden Age"; Natalie Dessay is in a class by herself, the voice bigger and richer than most Zerbinettas--but both her pyrotechnics and interpretation (what a fox!) are magnificent. And in Ben Heppner we at last find a tenor who can handle Strauss' almost impossible line: his voice rings out like a true hero, he's vocally secure enough to pay attention to the words, and he partners Voigt like Nureyev did Fonteyn. – Robert Levine, ClassicsToday.com

-----

A superb collection of some of the greatest performances of Richard Strauss’s orchestral, operatic, chamber and vocal works, brought together in a stunning 35-CD edition of fantastic value.

The collection begins with a survey of Strauss’s orchestral music, including the supremely popular symphonic poems - Don Juan, Don Quixote, Also sprach Zarathustra, Till Eulenspiegel, Tod und Verklärung, Eine Alpensinfonie and Ein Heldenleben are included, together with comparatively rare orchestral works such as the wonderful Burlesque for piano and orchestra. These recordings, performed by the Staatskapelle Dresden and conducted by Rudolf Kempe, are a particular highlight of this box set, some of the greatest recordings of the classical catalog.

Alongside an extensive survey of Strauss’s chamber music, performed by major international instrumentalists including Wolfgang Sawallisch (piano), Erno Sebestyen (violin), Wenn-Sinn Yang (cello), and the Sinnoffer Quartet, some of the definitive performances of Strauss’s best-loved operas are also featured. In particular, Herbert von Karajan’s Der Rosenkavalier remains unsurpassed.

This comprehensive box concludes with 3 CDs of Lieder, including the enduringly popular Vier letzte Lieder sung by Charlotte Margiono and a disc of historical recordings accompanied by Richard Strauss on piano.

• Contains a wealth of repertoire: the complete Orchestral Works, the complete Chamber Music, a generous selection of songs, the most famous operas and a disc of rare choral works.
• A star studded line-up of famous Strauss interpreters: Rudolf Kempe and his Staatskapelle Dresden (a Strauss orchestra par excellence!), Herbert von Karajan, Joseph Keilberth, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Karl Böhm, and vocalists Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Alessandra Marc, Deborah Voigt, Anne Sofie von Otter, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Charlotte Margiono.
• Contains a historical recording of songs accompanied by Richard Strauss himself on the piano.
• Liner notes included on CD-ROM.
