Although the tradition of "art music" for wind band was to some extent stomped out and marginalized in the mid-20th century by the mostly-German insistence on atonal music for orchestras rather than tuneful music without strings, many "legitimate" British composers produced band works of high quality and great popularity in the first half of the century. Gustav Holst's Suites for Military Band, both presented here, are classics of the repertoire, as is Ralph Vaughan Williams' 'English Folk Song Suite.' Timothy Reynish and the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra are experienced performers of this music and contributors to two volumes of Chandos' Percy Grainger Edition. In this program of Holst and Vaughan Williams they give highly polished performances of engaging works. Their readings of the Holst Suites make the reasons for the works' popularity quite apparent. In contrast to the Suites and the sprightly 'English Folk Song Suite,' Holst's 'Hammersmith' allows the band a step away from marches and folk songs to a dark, brooding tone poem. Reynish and his ensemble are as accomplished here as on the rest of the disc. |
