This splendid second volume pairing works by Anglo-Australian composers Edgar Bainton and Hubert Clifford restores some very distinguished and charming music to the catalog. Bainton's Epithalamion (1929) is a gorgeous tone poem, expertly scored and solidly structured, that sounds like the Frank Bridge of The Sea, or some other member of the English tonal (but not "Pastoral") school. It's really pretty music without a shred of fustiness or academicism to mar its fresh and joyful course. An English Idyll, on the other hand, belongs to the school of Elgar's Sea Pictures, and richly imagined music more than makes up for the not-very-impressive poetry of Neville Cardus(!)--yes, the same English music critic perhaps most famous today for promoting the cause of Mahler in the U.K. Hubert Clifford's efforts probably belong more to the school of "light" music, but they're no less well crafted or enjoyable for that. A Kentish Suite features a couple of sections--particularly its central Pastoral and Folk Song--that stand with the loveliest productions of English music between the Wars. Five English Nursery Tunes may stimulate some early memories, particularly in its final setting of "London Bridge is Falling Down". It's a charmer for sure. The two other short works reveal the composer's gift for spinning out a well-crafted miniature. It only remains to note that baritone Paul Whelan sings An English Idyll very well, that Martyn Brabbins conducts as though he has known this music all his life, that the orchestra plays wonderfully, and that Chandos' sonics are excellent. A delightful release of the sort of program that this label still does best. --David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com |
