Composer/performer Mark O'Connor finds his inspiration all around him. First trained in traditional English/American fiddle techniques, he went on to a classical study which eventually brought him full circle. As a composer he is as moved by indigenous music styles as by the sound of the songbird by his window. O'Connor's music is a unique melting pot of influences, blending Native American, Celtic, Slavic and other European traditional sounds with natural sounds. It might be considered peculiarly American. Certainly compositions such as "Trail of Tears," named after the forced march of Native Americans onto reservation lands, speak to a point in history where all these peoples meet. His performance itself is remarkable; he understands the material as only the composer can. The London Philharmonic Orchestra lifts what could be a very intimate, soulful solo violin to another level, giving O'Connor's compositions a serious edge. It is music to be reckoned with; it is music to be enjoyed. |
