Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Louis Moreau Gottschalk was perhaps the preeminent "salon" composer of his time. With barely a hint of Romantic torment or angst, these sparkling bonbons, played by Philip Martin with all the appropriate charm and good nature they deserve, bring only delight to the ear. Though influenced by the lighter side of Chopin, Gottschalk also added an exotic touch to his music demonstrated by his lifelong fascination with exotic rhythms derived from the Caribbean. 'La colombe' and 'La moissonneuse' are perfect examples of this tendency, both of which are played with carefree aplomb by Martin.
'La scintilla' is the one piece here with an overt Chopin sensibility, as it sounds like one of the Polish master's tossed off mazurkas. Graceful and playful, this work is an infectious piece of ear candy. 'Souvenir de Cuba,' a mazurka written during the composer's one-year stay in Cuba (and living in near-poverty), is highly uncharacteristic of Gottschalk for its melancholy and somber tone.
Perhaps the work here with the darkest quality is "Morte!" With its steady beat that never wavers from the funereal, it is perhaps the bleakest piece Gottschalk ever wrote. Coincidentally, it was the last piece he ever completed.
REVIEWS:
International Record Review (3/00, pp.90-91) - "...[Gottschalk's] elegant sensuality has surely had its most gracious advocate in Philip Martin....Dance rhythms...predominate - and there are frequent bursts of effervescence....this is Gottschalk playing at its most refined..."
