ArkivMusic and Canadian Brass Create a CD for the Holidays

With an artist exclusive, the online classical music retailer moves into Starbucks territory

BRYN MAWR, Pa.: In a new direction for its expanding online business, ArkivMusic, The Source for Classical Music™ (http://www.arkivmusic.com) is not only selling classical CDs and manufacturing formerly out-of-print recordings “on demand” but also collaborating with artists to make brand-new recordings. At ArkivMusic’s request, the internationally acclaimed Canadian Brass has recorded Christmas Tradition. And in a Starbucks-like twist, they recorded it exclusively for the retailer.

“Canadian Brass is, in our estimation, the world’s premier brass ensemble, and we’re thrilled they made this disc for us,” said ArkivMusic’s President, Eric Feidner. “In the ever-changing world of music retailing, artists like Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell are making CDs exclusively for Starbucks. Likewise, instead of relying on major labels for mass distribution, many classical artists see ArkivMusic as the most important conduit to connect directly with their fans and sell their recordings. So it is a privilege now to move into a new arena -- to actually create CDs together.”

Christmas Tradition, Music for Brass and Organ, showcases the Canadian Brass in the classic arrangements that made the sound of brass synonymous with the holidays. The CD is on the Canadian Brass’s label, Opening Day (ODR 7345), and it is on sale through the holidays for $14.99 at ArkivMusic.com.

Canadian Brass founding member Chuck Daellenbach believes “This Christmas Tradition CD represents a recorded history of the finest Christmas brass music crafted by the finest composers in the long history of the Canadian Brass -- Cable, Frackenpohl, Henderson, Mills and Robertson. We’re proud to make this musical contribution to enlivening the holiday spirit.”

This project is particularly meaningful for ArkivMusic’s Feidner and his twin brother, both brass players. Eric and ArkivMusic’s General Manager Jon Feidner had long admired a pair of best-selling and award-winning Canadian Brass recordings of holiday music that were released on LPs over 25 years ago. “We felt it was high time for the Brass to bring those classic arrangements together on a single disc, performed by the latest members of the group,” said Jon Feidner. “The astonishing technique and unique sound of the Canadian Brass have been remarkably consistent over the years and today they sound better than ever.”

Jon Feidner attended the recording sessions this past summer. “We assembled in an acoustically astounding church in Toronto. We chose our favorite repertoire and arrangements from the old recordings, and used the latest technology to capture the spectacular sound of brass instruments matched with the magnificently restored 1914 Casavant pipe organ at the Rosedale United Church, played by remarkable organist Eric Robertson.”

Eric Feidner concurred, “The Canadian Brass has given all of us the ultimate gift. We’re proud to have this CD as an ArkivMusic exclusive.”
