Canadian Brass and Eastman Wind Ensemble release Manhattan Music recording
The first-ever CD collaboration by
Since its founding by conductor Frederick Fennell at the Eastman School of Music, the Eastman Wind Ensemble has been in the forefront elevating the wind repertory through recordings. Fennell’s Mercury recordings of the 1950s and early ’60s were notable for their pioneering audio recording techniques. These “Living Presence” LPs focused on standard band literature by the most respected classical composers — heard for the first time in the newly balanced instrumentation.

Chuck Daellenbach was a student at Eastman during the heyday of the Eastman
Wind Ensemble in the early 1960s. His tuba-mate
was Dixon Van Winkle, who has since become a highly successful recording
producer/engineer, working with everyone from Frank Sinatra and Stan Getz, to
the Paul Winter Consort and Paul McCartney. Daellenbach and Van Winkle decided to revisit
and try to recapture some of the magical legacy of Frederick Fennell and the
Eastman Wind Ensemble. Their project, Manhattan Music, was recorded in the
fall of 2007 at the Eastman Theater in
