ArkivMusic to Release Out-of-Print EMI Classics Recordings as ArkivCDs
Online music retailer reaches agreement to produce thousands of back catalog EMI Classics, Angel Records, and Virgin Classics titles “On Demand”
BRYN MAWR, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)—ArkivMusic -- The Source for Classical Music™ (http://www.arkivmusic.com) announced today that it has reached an agreement to release out-of-print classical recordings from EMI Classics’ extensive and legendary catalog as “production-on-demand” ArkivCDs. EMI Classics is the third of the four major music distributors to participate in ArkivMusic’s . The deal includes prized Angel recordings and those of EMI’s Paris-based label, Virgin Classics.
“EMI Classics is very happy to partner with ArkivMusic to make some of our classic recordings available again,” stated Thomas Evered, General Manager and Senior Vice President of EMI Classics/Angel Records. “We are one of the oldest and most storied companies in the history of classical music and our vaults are vast, filled with countless musical treasures. ArkivMusic's boundless dedication to the music and their customers grants us a wonderful opportunity to bring our catalog to a new generation of listeners.”
ArkivMusic is launching the EMI Classics partnership with over 200 ArkivCDs. Some of the conductors featured in this initial release include Adrian Boult, Sergiu Celibidache, Neville Marriner, Riccardo Muti, Roger Norrington, Michel Plasson, André Previn, Simon Rattle, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Leopold Stokowski. Leading the list of performers is soprano Beverly Sills, baritone Thomas Hampson, violinist Nigel Kennedy, pianists Stephen Kovacevich and André Watts, trumpeter Maurice André, composer Thomas Adès, and the King’s Singers.
“EMI Classics has an artist roster including the greatest classical musicians of the recording era and a legacy that is second to none,” said ArkivMusic’s President, Eric Feidner. “We at ArkivMusic are very excited to be able to make so many legendary recordings available once again to classical consumers.”
ArkivMusic’s ArkivCD program currently offers over 2,700 recordings rescued from the vaults of SONY BMG, the Universal labels Decca, Philips, and Deutsche Grammophon, and a number of independent labels. Thousands of titles are in the pipeline for release in the coming months. ArkivMusic manufactures these discs using its production-on-demand system for producing, packaging, and shipping recordings. All music and packaging elements, including liner notes for select titles, are produced within 24 hours of the time a customer places an online order.
As one of the largest retailers of classical recordings in the world, ArkivMusic offers these previously unavailable recordings alongside a complete selection of practically every classical recording currently in print. Its database of available unique titles currently lists over 87,000 CDs, DVDs, DVD-Audios, and SACDs.
“Contrary to what appears to be the imminent demise of the physical disc in the world of popular music,” Feidner continued, “we have found -- and our customers have quite clearly told us -- that the physical CD in the classical music world is still the overwhelmingly preferred medium for purchase. We plan to continue to deliver on that demand both with our in-print catalog and by rescuing as much as we possibly can from the vaults.”
EMI Classics President Costa Pilavachi added, “With the closing of Tower Records and shrinking shelf space for classical recordings elsewhere, ArkivMusic is an extraordinary resource for the world of classical music today. I salute their deep knowledge of the classical recording catalog and service to music lovers with this invaluable offering of increasingly hard-to-find and out-of-print classical titles.”
