...None of the soloists is a familiar name, though—like the conductor—they can be found on a few recent opera recordings. I was not prepared for such a fine performance, partly because the printed timing indicates a very slow performance, but at 61 minutes it is on the edge of normal, with one movement racing and another unusually slow, but overall quite reasonable. The ensembles, including the choir boys, are up to the expected standard of excellence, while the soloists are superb. Most sopranos do a fine job, as here, but the tenor exceptionally sings with full voice, not falsetto (and he is not a countertenor, either, one way around the difficult tessitura of “Olim lacus colueram”), while the baritone also avoids falsetto in “Dies, nox Read more et omnia.” This belongs with the half-dozen finest performances ever recorded, and the sound is brilliant as well.
