Notes and Editorial Reviews

St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music. She is said to have suffered martyrdom in 178 and to have praised God with voice and instruments. Her festival falls on November 22. Here the most famous Odes to St. Cecilia, by Purcell and Handel, were performed. In the 20th century, music has been specially commissioned for the annual Festival of St. Cecilia at St. Sepulchre's Church, Holborn, by Howells, Finzi, Leighton, Rose and others.
