Notes and Editorial Reviews

Among the early dance repertories the most impressive material comes from late sixteenthcentury Italy. Here the court dances have elaborate choreographies with steps of considerable complexity for the man. And they are, in dance terms, infinitely more exciting than the much better known French dances described by Arbeau.

One difficulty with these dances is actually matching the available choreographies with the music. The simple musical material survives without clear indications about how often a particular section or group of sections must be played. And considerable interpretation is needed to adapt the music to the steps. But nine of the 16 pieces in Jeremy Barlow's anthology are linked to a booklet available from the
Read more Dolmetsch Historical Dance Society which describes the steps. I have not seen this; but apparently the repeats in those nine dances match the instructions in the booklet. This will be a tremendous asset for anyone wishing to dance that rich and imaginative repertory. The four members of the Broadside Band play the music attractively, with a considerable variety of sound and scoring. Jeremy Barlow himself plays some contemporary arrangements of the music on a fine Italian-sounding harpsichord and a deliciously rich regal. The disc is extremely well suited for dancing, whether by students or professionals.
