Notes and Editorial Reviews

A Season's Promise is not your typical stocking-stuffer Christmas disc--it's a musical exploration of contemporary views on the holiday. The liner notes even offer an intelligent exegesis on its history, giving the recording an (appropriately) academic bent, a "project" as well as a musical collection. With spectacular results conductor Judith Clurman leads a carefully chosen array of 20th-century-spanning Christmas pieces, from Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) to works by 25-year-olds Wayne Oquin and Lance Horne.

Clurman's thoughtful and expressive ordering of the pieces gives this release a continuous flow, creating a complete overarching listening experience. It begins
Read more simply with two unaccompanied works: an elegantly beautiful Ave Maria by Wayne Oquin, followed by Ned Rorem's sinewy While All Things Were in Quiet Silence. A focused variety of styles follows, to excellent effect: a typically jazz-infused offering by William Bolcom; some gorgeous (and very tonal) works by Stephen Paulus; Morten Lauridsen's dark, surprising O Magnum Mysterium; the steady, rapturous monochromatic build of Jennifer Higdon's Deep in the Night; and Thomas Cabaniss' Behold the Star, reminiscent of a slightly dissonant Greensleeves. The disc closes with the unaccompanied purity of Lance Horne's ravishing piece entitled "all together", a work full of subtle surprises, expertly composed for this ensemble. He and the equally talented Oquin are real finds, advanced for any age.

The real star of this release is Judith Clurman, a dynamic and powerful conductor who "plays" the New York Concert Singers as if they were the most delicate of harpsichord at times, the most rich and stately trumpet at others, always drawing out an appropriate sound for the music at hand. The group's diction is impeccable, its ensemble flawless, and its tone uniformly rounded and elegant, never soupy, sloppy, or brash. These performances are thorough and dedicated, taking each piece seriously, giving each work its due. The sound quality is extraordinarily high, closely recorded and produced to capture every breath of this potent ensemble. [4/20/2002]
