Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is not a crossover venture--repeat, not a crossover venture! Nor is it some midcult stylistic appropriation buoyed up by the notion of "one world", hoping that will be enough to make up for the lack of musical coherence. No, Evan Ziporyn is the real thing, a serious composer whose involvement with Gamelan music is more than a mere flirtation, and these are honest pieces of music that happen to use Ziporyn's Gamelan ensemble (plus friends) as any other composer might opt for a symphony orchestra or string quartet. He not only uses the instruments, but incorporates the techniques of proper Javenese composition--cycles, repeated patterns, recurring musical chunks--and does so in his own urban, rock-influenced Read more way.

Amok! is edgy, relentless, with some serious rhythmic drive; Tire Fire is more pensive and meditative, though it does have some smashing, ecstatic climaxes--part of it reads like angry Gamelan lounge/jazz/punk music, if you can imagine!. The pieces have an intricate arch to them and therefore bear up to (and deserve) multiple listenings. The biggest downside to this disc is the irritatingly flat recording quality--unpitched drums tend to sound like broken speakers, but not to the point of distraction.
