This is much more than simply another flute-and-harpsichord-recital disc. Flautist Jeremias Schwarzer and harpsichordist Egon Mihajlovic have conceived a program that explores the nature of the cultural life of 18th-century France, by comparing music for society gatherings with that played outside the drawing room. An added twist is provided by music of such 20th-century composers as Majoie Hajary, Albert Roussel and Francis Poulenc and their "takes" on the French baroque.

presented in François Couperin's 'Le Rossignol en amour' ('The Nightingale in Love'). Schwarzer and Mihajlovic intelligently grasp the baroque style as they tastefully ornament the tune's second portion. The 20th-century music, composed for an American amateur harpsichordist, reveals a baroque sensibility wed to some modern harmonies.
