Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ensemble Galilei is a group of six women who play fiddle, Scottish small pipes, oboe, recorder, pennywhistle, Celtic harp, viola da gamba, and percussion--which sounds like a delightful blend of Renaissance band and Irish acoustic ensemble. In this collection, the ensemble plays music from Shakespeare's time, such as the popular "Woodycock" and "Drive The Cold Winter Away", interspersing compatible new compositions written by the group's players and inspired by Shakespeare's writings. One of these, "Fire, Burn, and Cauldron Bubble", by Deborah Nurse, proves to be a rambunctious fiddle tune that uses plucked and struck sounds so effectively that you can almost hear a pot sizzling. Another, "Come, Gentle
Read more Night", by Carolyn Anderson Surrick and Liz Knowles, takes inspiration from one of Juliet's speeches about Romeo, and speaks plaintively of love and mystery. The songs are about life, which includes joy, sorrow, love, and death; and though there is not a single sung or spoken word on this CD, the music speaks straight to the heart in ways that transcend mere language. The recorded sound is so realistic that I could swear the small ensemble was right in my listening room. This is one of that rare handful of CDs that deserves to be called "exquisite".
