Notes and Editorial Reviews

John Woolrich is an astonishingly original composer from England who has also proven to be quite prolific: over 100 works have been published since 1981. 'Ulysses Awakes' deftly handles its materials: the wafting of a fragment from Monteverdi is interspersed amid a spiky Stravinsky-like string texture. 'The Theatre Represents a Garden: Night' is a beguiling work for classical orchestra that uses wisps and fragments from various Mozart works as a tribute to the composer for the Mozart bicentenary. In 'It is Midnight, Dr. Schweitzer,' inspired by the surreal scrap-metal structures of Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely, the composer uses his "musical machines" to explore Tinguely's fascination with time. 'A Leap in the Dark' is a dark and terse work Read more for string orchestra that in temperament and structure serves as a companion piece to the Schweitzer work. 'Four Concert Arias' offer a superb example of the composer's handling of texts derived from Hoffmann, Goethe, Giozzi, and Casanova. All four pieces are brooding and mysterious, as they are meant to evoke dark and nocturnal happenings. Effectively sung by the artists here, these arias are one day likely to be considered classic concert arias. Read less
