"These four excellent double bassists, all orchestra players in various German ensembles, call themselves “The Flying Basses.” It may be an ironic reference, an oxymoron if you will, given the natural inclination to associate low-pitched instruments with plodding pacing and less than nimble articulation. In practice, a string quartet of basses works remarkably well, due to the large range of the instrument, with pitches that reach into the realm of the violin.
