Harpist Carrol McLaughlin and flutist Brian Luce play Vittorio Monti’s 19th-century Csárdás with considerable panache. It shows the ability of the flutist much more than the harpist, but she gives him the rhythmic background he needs to shine. Michel Blavet’s G-Major Sonata for Flute and Continuo gives McLaughlin much more of a chance to show her excellent technique and musical ability. Its four movements have all the charm that one would expect to encounter at a concert in a French 18th-century drawing room. The adagio is slow and inviting and the allegro is invigorating. The aria is a melodic song and the presto a bouncy dance tune in which the flute plays fluid sets of triplets. Organist and composer Marie-Auguste Durand studied at the Paris Conservatory with César Franck and Camille Saint-Saëns. He also composed popular music, of which the Waltz No. 1 is the best known. Christus Factus is an arrangement that McLaughlin based on the Waltz but with added material. McLaughlin’s Allume is a contemporary piece that treats the flute and harp much more equally than any of the older works. Here the harp has intriguing music to play that demands serious virtuosity. McLaughlin designed Immanuel , which features the harp accompanied by four flute lines, to be played as a church processional. McLaughlin’s 21st-century Lifted by Angels is a strikingly dramatic work that adds a bit of spice to this recording with its catchy rhythms. Her Love’s Sanctuary, The Temple of Philae , puts us in a romantic mood as we listen to a seemingly ancient tune and contemplate the power of human love over the millennia.

Luce and McLaughlin give us two bites of Benjamin Godard’s Trois Morceaux : the peaceful Allegro and the fantasy inspiring Idylle . Both fit the recording well and add to its value as an aid to calming stress at the end of a busy day. Howard Buss’s Seaside Reflections , too, bring a sense of timeless calm and relaxation. Swing No. 1 might involve an energetic dance that lapses into a more relaxed set of movements after a while. Luce and McLaughlin take the listener to a far off place with their dreamy version of Astor Piazzolla’s “Café 1930.” Contemplating that era takes us to the other side of the earth in a time between the world wars when tango was an art practiced on a nightly basis. There are several other recordings of this work. On Suite en Duo , harpist Floraleda Sacchi and flutist Claudio Ferrarini offer an elegant rendition on a 2008 Phillips disc and the Krutzen McGhee Duo perform it on a 2004 Skylark Music CD. I don’t find either of these recordings more impressive than Luce and McLaughlin on the Albany disc. For their final offering, Luce and McLaughlin play a transcription of Niccolò Paganini’s 24th Caprice. It’s a tour de force for both instruments and a fitting end to this delightful recording.
