This disc, subtitled “Milongas and Tangos for Two Guitars,” features the talents of Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio, who first came together as a duo at the “Guitar ’75 Festival” in Toronto. Later offered a scholarship to Andrés Segovia’s master classes in Santiago de Compostela, they have since performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the White House (during the Clinton administration), Carnegie Hall, and the Casals Festival, among others. They have received consistently good reviews in this magazine, although this was my first exposure to them.

I found their playing extremely beautiful, well crafted and, yes, elegant. As classical duo-guitarists go, they are at or near the very top. Not a single piece in this well-chosen recital lacked attention to the minutest detail of nuance, and their tango and milonga performances are indeed sometimes quite enlivening (for instance, “La Petisa” from Adrien Politi’s Tango Duo ). I hasten to point out that if I give Castellani solo billing in the above header, it is only because she is the only one of the two who performs three pieces on solo guitar. Thus able to examine her technique as separated from her husband-partner, I was quite taken with her easy facility—she really does make even the most difficult passages sound like rolling off a log. If I had any reservation it is only because I personally like a more gypsy-like (or more flamenco-styled) guitar playing, which of course is antithetical to the Segovia style and, thus, to the duo’s style. In their field, I would go so far as to say that they are as good or better than the legendary Romeros.

The Castellani-Andriaccio duo consistently brings out a great deal of color, and that in itself is a plus in its favor. As for the music, it is varied and interesting, ranging from the harmonically simpler music of Politi and Marcelo Coronel to the much more complex Jongo of Paolo Bellinati, described in Andriaccio’s liner notes as identifying “the black culture and communities of Brazil, particularly in the south.” I was also much taken with Alfonso Montes’s Milonga al Sur , written as an homage to Piazzolla.

This is an excellent CD for lovers of duo-guitar music as well as a superb introduction to the work of this highly gifted duo.
