Notes and Editorial Reviews

For his grand romantic opera Die Feen (The Fairies), Wagner reflected not only on Marschner, Weber, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Gluck – the influences of whom can be heard – but also on older predecessors than these. Contrary to the actual tradition of Romanticism, he did not search the Middle Ages for his subject, but went back to antiquity. The debutant wished to write an opera about none other than Orpheus, the most famous singer in Greek mythology and the son of Apollo, the leader of the muses. OehmsClassics now presents a live recording of the two concert performances at the Alte Oper Frankfurt given in May 2011.  Early Wagner at it's best. December 13, 2012 By Joseph  Erdeljac (West Chester, PA) See All My Reviews "This addition to the recorded operas of Wagner is a welcome breath of fresh air. It is well cast and well sung and very exciting listening. It is interesting to hear Wagner in his early stage of opera composing, before he got a bit heavy and dark." Report Abuse
