TRUMPET FIESTA: A Celebration Of Rafael Méndez David Hickman, Arturo Sandoval, Wayne Bergeron, James Wilt, Jens Lindemann, Robert Karon (tpt); Miriam Hickman (pn); Arturo Sandoval (perc) SUMMIT DCD 585 (71:46)

As the title indicates, this disc is a tribute to the great Mexican trumpeter Rafael G. Méndez (1906–81), who during the 1950s and 1960s was widely regarded as the world’s greatest virtuoso on this instrument. His repertoire spanned both classical and popular music; the 22 selections on this recital lean heavily toward Read more the latter and include 13 short compositions by Méndez himself, a number of which he never recorded. The remaining nine selections are arrangements (mostly by Méndez) of pieces by Georges Bizet (the “Habanera” from Carmen ), Zequinha de Abreu, Pablo de Sarasate ( Zigeunerweisen ), Celso Guscan, Pascual Marquina, Bernardino Monterde, Amilcare Ponchielli (a portion of the “Dance of the Hours” from La gioconda ), and two works identified only as “Traditional.”

Lead soloist David Hickman is the head of the Rafael Méndez Library at Arizona State University, and the album was conceived by him and its other participants at the annual Rafael Méndez Trumpet Festival in Mexico City. He is accompanied by his wife at the piano, and in several numbers by prominent trumpeters from the Los Angeles area, the best known being freelance trumpeter Arturo Sandoval (who also plays percussion instruments on tracks 2 and 11) and Canadian Brass alumnus Jens Lindemann. The performances are all dispatched with brilliant exuberance and complete stylishness, though some of the unbelievably stratospheric high notes bring to mind Rossini’s notorious characterization of the high C of Gilbert Duprez (the first tenor to sing the notes from the chest): “the squawk of a capon with its throat cut.” The booklet notes offer brief comments on the various pieces, Méndez, and the performers; the recorded sound is suitably bright and forward. If this repertoire is your bowl of musical south-of-the-border chili, scarf it down and enjoy.
