Notes and Editorial Reviews

"‘Jamais deux sans trois’, say the French. Fittingly, then, this CD completes a trilogy devoted to the airs de cour which help to re-define one’s perception of French court song. The first two were devoted to Guédron and Moulinié, and this last one to Antoine Boësset, who succeeded Guédron at the French royal court on his death in 1620. In many ways it is the most diverse and complex of the three. Some songs appear in a four-voice version with continuo accompaniment, departing from the omnipresent voice-plus-lute format that once pervaded recordings of this repertory. And the songs are Read more interspersed with instrumental entrées from ballets de cour to which Boësset contributed in the 1620s (Louis XIII was an avid dancer)...The instrumentalists weave a spell-binding richness of detail. As the conclusion to a ‘first phase’ of Le Poème Harmonique’s involvement with airs de cour, it will be interesting to see where they go from here."
