Notes and Editorial Reviews

The album’s most substantial offerings are the twelve Preludes for Piano, Book I, by the Impressionist master Claude Debussy: among the greatest pianistic “tone paintings” ever composed; followed by Debussy’s sensually passionate (and virtuosic) L’isle Joyeuse. We then hear Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka: Three Movements for Piano – a brilliant pianistic tour de force based on his second great ballet score; this gives way to his “Piano—Rag Music,” a heady (and happy) cubist approach to the American Ragtime form.

Continuing Andrew Von Oeyen’s penchant for anniversaries, as evidenced by his acclaimed survey of piano music by Franz Liszt in 2011, marking the bicentennial year of the composer’s birth, this 2013 release marks the
Read more centennial year of Debussy’s 24 Preludes (composed between 1909 and 1913) – of which the first book of twelve is offered here.

David Newman, who created this album’s final two selections specifically for Andrew Von Oeyen, wrote "Andrew von Oeyen (is), in my opinion the best pianist of his generation.". - Delos Read less
