Notes and Editorial Reviews
When talking about Italian instrumental music of the 19th century, thirty years ago, it implied a nebulous world, the existence of which was known, but could not be defined for certain. recent years), making them appear as variations of a mutual cultural heritage, finally here to stay. Mercadante moved at an early age to Naples. He attended the San Sebastiano conservatory where he became the favorite student of Niccolo Zingarelli. At the age of 24, he composed his first opera, Apoteosi di Ercole which was produced at the renowned Teatro San Carlo in Naples. Years of intensive activity followed which produced over 60 operas which were produced all over Italy. Sadly, from the 1820s onward, his fame was overshadowed by that of Bellini and Donizetti. In 1840, he became the Director of the Naples Conservatory, a position he held until his death. His production of instrumental works is surprisingly extensive and has only been partly researched. The three concertos presented here only scratch the surface of his output. As more work is done, more fine works will come to light. Read less
