Manfred Weiss was born in Niesky (Upper Lusatia) in 1935 into a family belonging to the Herrnhut Brotherhood. Even though he was a composer of the German Democratic Republic, from 1965 on, he began to espouse his Christian belief more and more. He regarded music as a means for helping others to cope with the problems of life, not as something for only the select few to enjoy. It was only after he reached this state of consciousness was he able to markedly improve his musical expression and in fact cope himself with the threats he was faced with in his own everyday life. 1970 to 1985, resulted in deeper insights into the principal stylistic techniques of the Second Viennese School, the new Polish School and the pointillist serialism of early Stockhausen and Ligeti. From 1985 to the present, semantic aspects have increasingly entered Weiss' compositions, creating a very peculiar world of expression. The works presented on this CD are from the composer's second period (the organ concerto and violin concerto) and from the third period (the symphony).
