BOLIVIAN BAROQUE, VOLUME 3 Florilegium; Arakaendar Bolivia Choir; James Johnstone (org) CHANNEL 28009 (SACD: 60: 00)

This disc, part of a series that seems not to have been covered in Fanfare until now, is a real treat. It draws material from scores used in Read more Bolivia’s Jesuit mission settlements and urban cathedrals. Much though not all of it was imported from Spain, but the material seems to have been carefully chosen to appeal to native rhythmic sensibilities. Consequently, a lot of this material will appeal to fans of the villancico and ensalada . Interspersed with the vocal items by Roque Jacinto de Chavarría, Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, Juan de Araujo, Diego Casseda, Sebastián Duron, and the ubiquitous Anonymous are a few organ pieces by Domenico Zipoli played by James Johnstone on a wonderfully reedy organ in the mission church of Santa Ana de Chiquitos, 22 Jeep hours into the Amazonian jungle. As it happens, most of the rest of this disc was recorded in Holland during the Bolivian choir’s European tour. Not all of this is fun and games; Torrejón’s Missa Octavo Tono holds that combination of lyricism and rhythmic spring peculiar to Italian vocal music of the period, including Monteverdi’s. There’s an anonymous instrumental sonata that Florilegium plays vibrantly but without the extremes and mannerisms that so annoy some critics. It all wraps up with a brief, exuberant folk tune that somehow is fully in keeping with the more liturgical material (which was used to teach everyday Bible stories rather than, say, to explore the drama of the Crucifixion). The audio quality meets Channel’s usual DSD standard, one of the highest there is.
