...From Franck to Gershwin is a big jump and especially Gershwin as played by Jean-Pierre Rampal in a new CBS collection called "Fascinatin' Rampal". It opens, appropriately, with a deliciously embroidered account of Fascinatin' rhythm and includes transcriptions for flute backed by a small or orchestral group (and occasionally a synthesizer) of favourite Gershwin songs, plus an eight-minute potpourri taken from An American in Paris (made to sound unusually elegant). In the nostalgic numbers Rampal's approach is positively sultry (notably Summertime, taken indulgently slowly, and The man I love), but with very polished support by members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Michel Colombier this is very seductive. artificially forward in the manner of a pop session but Rampal's larger-than-life flute timbre sounds gorgeous. A fun [album] ideal for late evening, and especially as a background for a dinner party.
