Notes and Editorial Reviews

Amilcare Ponchielli's opera La Gioconda was recorded for this DVD at the Vienna State Opera in 1986. It is an opera in four acts to an Italian libretto by Arigo Boito. This melodramatic lyric drama's tale of love and murder has been popular to this day, especially the Act 3 ballet "Dance of the Hours." There are beautiful passionate arias in it such as the soprano's "Suicidio!" and the tenor's "Cielo e mar." The international stars Eva Marton and Placido Domingo guarantee an opera experience to remember.
