Now that the classical CD world is no longer dominated by the big labels reproducing the central repertoire every few years with a handful of photogenic new superstars, more buried treasure is coming to the surface. Who’d have thought there existed a substantial sub-genre of Latin American trios for the combination of piano, clarinet, and cello? At least one of these pieces was commissioned by the Trio Montecino, and all are given committed, sensitive, and colorful performances on the above disc.

This music is highly imaginative and worthwhile. By alternating dance-inflected allegros with a series of “Funeral Processions,” the composer Victor Agudelo deftly evokes the extremes of life for the poorest street vendors of Colombia. Lucia Patiño’s single-movement fantasia takes us through a series of wartime impressions incorporating moods of mystery and sadness. Alti-son-antes by Chilean Felipe Pinto d’Aguiar Montt is more abstract but equally notable for its range of color.

The American composer Roberto Sierra, born in Puerto Rico, is the most familiar name among this group. (Naxos recently reissued a Musical Heritage CD of his early chamber works.) His Three Fantasias brim with energy and prove that a composer does not necessarily require a full orchestra to create a specifically Latin excitement. This is contemporary nationalistic art music at its best. Last but certainly not least, Gerardo Dirié’s trio is a perfectly balanced evocation of Chilean and Argentinean rural music, rising out of an impressionistic (nostalgic?) mist. Dirié displays a subtle ear for sonority; some of his instrumental doublings are quite unlike anything I have heard before. The second of his fantasias approaches Bartók in its sparseness of means and intensity of expression.

Pablo Mahave-Veglia (cello), Paulina Zamora (piano), and David Shea (clarinet) meet every expressive demand throughout. I especially like the way Shea finds an edgy, earthy tone when it is called for. Sound is immediate but not uncomfortably so. Terrific.
