This recording is devoted to the musicians, both instrumentalists and composers, who formed a part of Monteverdi's circle at either the court in Mantua or in St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.
The "Concerto delle Dame" originated in Ferrara at the end of the 16th century and spread quickly throughout Italy, bringing together the most renowned female singers of the period. The inheritors of the madrigal style, Monteverdi included, gave themselves entirely over to the suave harmonies of these duos for two voices and basso continuo, using them for music designated for both sacred and secular ends.

considerable repertory of music for two soprano instruments (a due canti) was thus created, for which cornett or cornetto was frequently specified. The cornett was praised as being the most apt of all the instruments in the imitation of the human voice. The violin was also used, for at this time the instrument was acquiring its first letters of nobility.
