MUSIQUE POUR MAZARIN! Le Jardin Secret CORO 16060 (64:29 Text and Translation)

Music of MICHI, CHARPENTIER, LULLY, GUÉDRON, CARISSIMI, L. ROSSI, L. COUPERIN, DEMACHY, M. ROSSI, PASQUALINI, CAMPRA

Cardinal Mazarin, born Giulio Mazarini (1602–61), was an Italian churchman who came to Paris as papal nuncio in 1634, gained favor with Cardinal Richelieu, and succeeded him as prime minister, a position he held until his Read more death. Though he was a cardinal-deacon, he was never a priest, and when he was named bishop of Metz he resigned rather than accept ordination. His political career was tumultuous, both for civil disturbances and for relations with the Empire and Spain, but as a patron of learning, art, and music he brought Italian opera to Paris. His library now belongs to the state, a fabulous collection of which a Gutenberg Bible and the Gradual of St. Denis have been reproduced in facsimile.

By focusing on this extraordinary figure, the ensemble, consisting of soprano Elizabeth Dobbin and four players, was able to construct a thematic program of 17th-century French and Italian music. Lully (representing the French, though born in Italy) and Luigi Rossi were originally at the core of the program, but others were added. The Frenchman Charpentier and his Italian teacher, Carissimi, were sensible pairings. But some works mentioned significantly in the notes are omitted, such as Cavalli’s Ercole amante (it was commissioned for the king’s marriage but was performed only a year after Mazarin’s death). Yet Campra’s L’Europe galante is included because it represented the ultimate junction of French and Italian taste, though it was completed much later, in 1697. This contradicts the booklet announcement that the music would have been heard at the court of Mazarin. More amusing is the inclusion of two “Mazarinades,” anonymous and scurrilous pamphlets of the kind circulated by his enemies, set to music by harpsichordist David Blunden. These would hardly have been heard at the cardinal’s court.

In their first recording, the ensemble turns in a delightful performance of this music. Dobbin sings all but six tracks, her voice and temperament well suited to the prevailing style. A few familiar pieces are included, such as Carissimi’s “Deh! memoria” and Charpentier’s “Tristes déserts,” but this disc provides an opportunity to broaden our grasp of music of the period with a few unfamiliar composers tossed in. Orazio Michi (1594–1641), for example, can be heard only on two recent CDs. She tries to differentiate the French and Italian elements of the program, but the subtleties were lost on me. The sound is natural and lovely. This is an unusual offering that will interest specialists.
