NOUVELLES VAGUES—DE GODARD À AUDIARD Traffic Qnt NAÏVE 5093 (59:50)

Excerpts (arr. Desplat) from: DUHAMEL Pierrot le fou. DELERUE Le mépris. Jules et Jim. Garde à vue. Le roi de cœur. Le peau douce. L’important c’est d’aimer. Une aussi longue absence. DESPLAT Un héros très discret. Sur mes Read more lévres. Regarde les hommes tomber. MORRICONE Peur sur la ville. BARBIERI Le dernier tango à Paris. JARRE La route des Indes

One could imagine the Kronos Quartet (plus one!) coming up with a concept like this, except I doubt that they could tap into the “cool” factor as well as the Traffic Quintet and arranger/composer Alexandre Desplat (who also provides the “direction musicale”) have done here. This CD should come with a glass of Pernod. (I was going to say “a pack of Gauloises,” but I don’t smoke, and I don’t wish to promote it!)

What Desplat has done is to choose music from several European films (not all of them from the French New Wave, but never mind that) and to arrange it for the Traffic Quintet, which includes two violins (Dominique Lemonnier, Anne Villette), a viola (Estelle Villotte), a cello (Raphaël Perraud), and a double bass (Philippe Noharet). Desplat obviously was less interested in mimicking the sound of the original scores than he was in exploring how the scores might sound in a very different medium. In other words, listeners who are looking for faithful recreations of this music must look elsewhere.

If you are open-eared though, this CD has much to offer. I imagine this game is most fun if you know all of the music in its original form. I can’t claim that, although there was much on this CD that was familiar to me. Even when the music wasn’t familiar to me, though, I was charmed and intrigued.

Man does not live on Bruckner symphonies alone. I can’t responsibly call this a profound CD, but it is brainily entertaining, and once it nestled in my CD player, it was hard to dislodge it. It’s nice to be beguiled without condescension. My only complaint is that I would have preferred a booklet note that had more to say about the films and the music, instead of a short and rather silly essay by Tonino Benacquista, whom I understand to be a popular French writer who has a strong interest in films. Never mind that, either. Nouvelles vagues is très hip, particularly if you are a cineaste comme moi , and the music, the arrangements, the performances, and the engineering all are first-class.
