Notes and Editorial Reviews

Simon Estes is a pleasure to hear, accompanied by the Howard Roberts Chorale, a disciplined body of singers with fine voices and skilled musicianship.

The sound of negro voices as Delius heard them coming in the cool of the evening from the plantations is something one can strain the inner ear to catch, and no especially strong imagination is needed to understand why it should have haunted him for the rest of his life. There are moments when an approximation of the magic is caught here. In Sometimes I feel like a motherless child the choral mass has a sweet richness with the rustle of an improvisatory quality about it; perhaps in Steal away to Jesus and Every time fleet the spirit too. But much of the time the appeal
Read more is of another kind. The opening (Ride on, King Jesus) is showbiz: the big band, the bouncy dance-rhythm idiom, the expensive gloss. At the end of Side 1 the cinema organ arises as of old, vox humana and tremulant aquiver. This is for Go down, Mose.y which develops differently but remains in the cinema, now in the world of the Giant Epic. Side 2 ends with a suggestion of Brahms's Wiegenlied developing into a harmonic orgy with He's got the whole world in His hands in the midst.

Howard A. Roberts is responsible for much: for arranging, orchestrating, conducting and producing. The Howard Roberts Chorale, a disciplined body of singers with fine voices and skilled musicianship, conveys a feeling of knowing what they are about and enjoying it. Simon Estes, the admirable Porgy of recent extracts (Philips 412 7201PH, 5/85), is the resonant soloist, wanting just a little more variety of expression and colour but still a pleasure to hear. Recorded sound is opulent.
