Notes and Editorial Reviews

The drawbacks here are Stolz’s own overture and his crude reprise of the main waltz at the end. Otherwise I rate this one of the best recordings of The Merry Widow for Hilde Gueden’s whipped cream Widow and Per Grunden’s Danilo – a genuine light tenor rather than a pushed-up baritone. The addition of stylishly performed excerpts from The Count of Luxemburg provides a reminder that The Merry Widow was not Lehar’s only early success.
