Notes and Editorial Reviews

Every year, the choirs of Christ Church Cathedral in Montreal present a variety of Advent and Christmas music during regular Sunday services as well as at a number of Carol Services. The selections on this disc aim at reproducing the festive spirit of these occasions, bringing the warmth of the familiar as well as the pleasant surprise of discovery. All the organ pieces are based on the wonderful German carol In dulci jubilo, as is a medley of 16th, 17th and 19th century arrangements, and a Sanctus. Also, the hope for returning plant life in the dead of winter seems just as strong as the longing for light at the darkest time of the year. Hence, a number of 'botanical' selections. Are included, in addition, a number of traditional folk and Read more spiritual melodies, updated arrangements of old favourites, and some exciting contemporary expressions of the joy of the season.  A talented choir with great Christmas music January 9, 2013 By Steven J. (Charleston, SC) See All My Reviews "This is a lovely recording. The acoustics of the cathedral provide a wonderful sound for these lovely carols of Christmas. It's a fuller, richer sound than that of King's College which makes the carols a little more dynamic and richer. I would definitely recommend this recording if you're a bit tired of the austere recordings of King's." Report Abuse
