You'd never know it from the front cover, but this disc, issued in 1991 by Columbia on CD, is an all-star date performing some of the finest pop, jazz, and soul tunes from the '70s and '80s (and one or two jazz classics). For starters, the man who arranged much of this session, and played synth and piano, is none of the than Fred Hersch!!!! Add to this mix Wayne Krantz on guitar, trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist and flutist Dick Oatts, and bassist David Finck, and you have a killer studio band. The tunes, whether it's Carole King's "Far Away" or Stevie Wonder's "All in Love Is Fair," or Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," or Jeffrey Osborne's "On the Wings of Love" are winners. Throw in some Duke Ellington ("Mood Indigo"), and Van Morrison ("Moondance") and you have a winning combination of smooth jazz with excellent musicianship, tasteful arrangements, and excellent sound. Recommended. ~ Thom Jurek
