Notes and Editorial Reviews

Teddy and Alice is an honestly patriotic American musical. About half of its music is drawn from melodies by the inimitable John Philip Sousa. These are accepted or modified or used as the inspiration for new songs as the show's book and lyrics required. The other songs were written by Richard Kapp as the show required. Kapp's task was to keep the feeling of Sousa's material even in songs that were genuinely new. Wave the Flag is the title of the song that brings the curtain down after Act I. The song rests squarely on the shoulders of The Stars and Stripes Forever. The Dwellers in the Western World depicts in its three movements the three major contributors to making America what it is today: The Red Man, the White Man and the Black Man. Read more Three Quotations is somewhat less problematical, a grouping together of three disparate pieces under a single umbrella title. Read less
