Work: Intermezzo from Vanessa
About This Work
The orchestral Intermezzo from Samuel Barber’s opera, Vanessa is a luminously scored piece that, in less than 4 minutes, seems to emotionally sum up the emotional trajectory of the entire opera. Opening with a short horn call, also heard within the
opera, the music grows via a theme that expresses a wandering or exploring nature. The music grows in this inquiring mood, reaching a climax of great intensity that then quickly evaporates into mystery. Not as frequently performed as Barbers other works, this short Intemezzo nevertheless haunts the memory.
