Notes and Editorial Reviews

These performers offer lovely performances of three very enjoyable pieces. The playing of all three soloists is tasteful, idiomatic, and also expressive, while the accompaniments have the requisite punch and color while still offering plenty of warmth in the lyrical slow movements. The intonation of both soloists and ensemble is gratifyingly secure, always a sticking point in music of the classical period, and a particular problem with the solo cello.

Stamitz’s concertos for the instrument number among the best exemplars of the genre in the classical period. The first movements, both marked “allegro con spirito”, are particularly successful (sound clip)—there’s none of that usual moderato noodling that so quickly turns
Read more boring. Rather, orchestra and soloist jump right into a spirited dialog that continues uninterruptedly for a good 10 minutes in each case.

The Sinfonia concertante features the same forces as Mozart’s more famous work, and although—let’s face it—it’s not Mozart, it’s still awfully good, and a pleasure from beginning to end. It’s also a good deal shorter than the Mozart: music that never outstays its welcome. This well engineered release is definitely worth considering if you want to expand your love of the classical period beyond the standards.
