The eclectic Leonarda label is primarily devoted to the music of women composers. This recording features vocal and chamber works of Judith Lang Zaimont. Zaimont is not exactly a household name and this is a pity. The recipient of a number of prestigious awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Debussy Fellowship, Zaimont is extremely prolific with over 100 works to her credit and enjoys an international reputation.
This recording presents the world premiere recordings of Zaimont's challenging music. 'Greyed Sonnets' is a song cycle for soprano and piano that is set to the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Sara Teasdale and Christina Rossetti. Read more withered. 'Chansons Nobles et Sentimentales' are set to texts by the great symbolist poets Baudelaire, Verlaine and Rimbaud. Zaimont captures all of the poetry's imagery in a musical score that is harmonically rich.
