Shin-ichiro Ikebe was born in 1943 in Mito-City. From childhood, he studied piano and composition. In 1967, he graduated from the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. At the graduate school of the same university, he passed the final examination in 1971. In his student days he won the first prize in the 35th Japan Music Competition in 1966. He has also won a number of other prizes both in Japan and abroad. He has composed five symphonies, a number of concertos, operas, music for film and television and a great deal of incidental music for the theater. Today he is the Vice President of the Japan Federation of Composers, and a committee member of the International Society for Contemporary Music, Japanese section.
