English conductor William Boughton began his career as a cellist, studying at the Guildhall School of Music in London, later with Milos Sadlo at the Prague Academy of Music, and with Maurice Eisenberg in the U.S. He briefly worked as a cellist in several British orchestras, including the London Sinfonietta, the Royal Philharmonic, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He soon concentrated his energies on conducting and in 1980, he founded the EnglishRead more String Orchestra in Worcester. From 1983 to 1988, Boughton served as artistic director of the Malvern Festival and in 1986, he was named principal conductor of the Jyväskylä Symphony Orchestra in Finland, a position he held until 1993.
