Here’s an interesting, delightful album of wind quintets old and modern (at least up to Elliott Carter in 1948) played by a very young group from Weimar. Like so many young classical musicians nowadays, they play in that crisp, brisk, no-nonsense and no-inflection style that’s so much in vogue. This has its drawbacks in the music of little-known composer Franz Danzi (1763–1826), a cellist in the Mannheim court orchestra, which was famous for its wind soloists. Danzi wrote nine such quintets during the period 1820–24 for the then-famed Reicha Ensemble. The music is tuneful and delightful, although I can well imagine a more nuanced group providing a more interesting reading.

Joachim Linckelmann’s quintet arrangement of Mozart’s Magic Flute overture is a wonderfully spirited introduction to this recital and the group. Naturally, the Weimar players revel in the more modern vocabulary of Pavel Haas, a pupil of Janá?ek, whose quintet is a delightful combination of traditional-style melodies with contemporary harmonic touches. I am particularly impressed, however, with Elliott Carter’s 1948 quintet, dedicated to his teacher Nadia Boulanger and composed in his earlier, neoclassic style. The music is rhythmically sprightly and not without touches of humor.

Of course, the Taffanel quintet is a classic of the genre, made famous in this country via the recording by the New York Wind Quintet (Everest 6080, LP). Of course, I speak of the original ensemble and not its later incarnation; that first group included Samuel Baron on flute, Jerome Roth on oboe, David Glazer on clarinet, Arthur Weisberg on bassoon, and John Barrows on horn. Both groups play the Taffanel quintet with great brio and spirit, but the New York combo also adds many nuances to the musical line that the Weimer group does not. On the other hand, the Weimar group’s hornist is even smoother than Barrows, so there is a plus in their favor.

All in all, this is a sparkling and delightful CD.
